Sir Allan Napier MacNab was one of the most remarkable men in Canadian history - premier, Speaker of both houses of Parliament, a member of parliament for more than a quarter-century, a railway magnate, a land developer on a massive scale, one of the wealthiest men in Canada, the hero of two military campaigns fought on Canadian soil, a knight and a baronet. Each year a quarter of a million people visit MacNab's home, Dundurn Castle, on the outskirts of Hamilton, Ontario, the 'ambitious city,' which he helped so much to shape between his move there in 1826 and his death in 1862.
